====== Historical Events ======
====== History ======

The city of Maltaro has existed as a trade port for the past 150 years, during that time it has built a name and reputation as a strict but fair city that provides a good trade for those that wish to work with it, but also very tough penalties on those breaking it's laws (see Thieves guild years 67-81*).

The first settlers were an adventuring party that decided to settle in that area, slowly they started trading and building the community that flourished and became the city that it is today.

The founding members rotated leadership of the town and that tradition remain till today, where every 5 years the role of council leadership changes to a different member, and never from the same guild/order twice in the span of 20 years.

====== Thieves guild uprising 67-81 ======

For many years since the establishment of the city the Thieves guild tried to train assassins and form a shadow council in the city, they used the turmoil of the forest wars to attempt exerting influence and manipulating the city council members to their will, the plot was revealed and the guild was decimated by the wizards guilds, the Temples and City watch. Since then the rogues guild operates under a very tough scrutiny, and only in the last 50 years they were able to regain a position and work in the city.

====== The forest wars (60-81) ======

A bloody 21 years conflict that cost thousands of lives both in and out of the city and nearly brought on the destruction of Maltaro began when a sect of rouge Elf Druids decided that the old forest is off limits to any non elf.
They enlisted many to their cause, mostly Rangers, Barbarians and common folks but also used the Treants and the forest as their allies, they then attacked any foragers and settlements that lay close to the forest and forbidden any one from going in the woods, eventually they got power hungry and tried to march on the city, they managed to destroy large parts of the old city but eventually were beaten and killed.
This promoted the foundation of the “Outer Watch”: an order of rangers and druids that patrol and maintain the balance of the woods and the farm lands.

====== Winter Flood (89) ======

In the winter of the year 89 the weather was so extreme with storms and rain that the river level rose so high that it penetrated deep inland to flood the city warehouses and the winter grain stores, several hamlets of the farmers were over flown and the fatalities occurred.
For two month the city suffered the onslaught of the river till the spring came and the weather subsided and with it the river went back to normal height, fishing and trade were severely interrupted during that time as vessels had no place to moor and current were too strong to go up river back to the city.

====== The Quake (110) ======

In the year 110 there was a quake in the region, the aftershocks were felt in the city and the entire region.
Divinations and other magical means were used to find that it was a very rare eruption of an underground volcano that was presumed dormant, but the damage did not reach the surface.

====== The hordes of Xillion (110-113) ======

This event changed the militia and the attitude of the city toward the denizens of the North Mountains forever.
Xillion was a Hill Giant that managed to rally many of his tribesmen and the tribes from under the mountains to “reclaim” the region from the “human infestation”.
He declared war on all travellers and any citizens of the city, in or outside the walls, they killed without provocations and in the first year of the conflict the “outer Watch” had been decimated.
In the two years that followed, skirmishes grew to a weekly occurrence and many of the guilds in the city were drafted to the war effort: Wizards, Temples, masons, alchemists, Smiths.
All helped to stem the tide of the slaughter, slowly the fighting moved away from the city walls, then away from the farm fields till the invading forces were driven back beyond the forest and all the way back to the mountains.
The final battle took place where Xillion killed the new leader of the reformed “Outer Watch” but in doing so exposed himself to the remaining forces and with a combination of powerful magic and many warriors he was killed.
When he was slain his remaining forces scattered, Xillion's head to this day decorates the main room of the “Outer Watch” assembly building.

====== Dragon War (125-128) ======

In the year 125 an earth quake struck the northern mountains, and the tremors were felt in the city. Six month after that occurrence reports started coming in from the “outer watch” about frantic behaviour of wild life animals, and an unusual migration of bird and predators.
Another 6 month went by with the reports increasing in frequency, also reports of a significant drop in game stock in the old forest.
The city decided to send and expedition to investigate, 6 of the most experienced Rangers went out to learn what is going on.
A sole member retuned 3 weeks later with is right arm cut off below the elbow, and his body covered with burns, the group had uncovered the Dragon Dokajitio.
Once the Dragon found out about the city he started attacking convoys and merchant ships coming along the river, but for a long time the city was unable to stop the attacks.
During the following 2 years he managed to bring the commerce to a dead stop and no one lived outside the walls, the “outer watch” splintered and formed the “city watch” as it was unable to patrol outside the wall.
In the spring of year 128 a group of adventurers came from the south and hunted the dragon, fighting him for 3 days and driving it away from the city, on the 3rd day they managed to kill the dragon.
The group's identity is still a mystery to the city although the records show it that they were: a Gnome arcane caster, a Human Monk, a Human female Cleric, a Bald Elf Wizard and a Human Ranger.
Once they killed the Dragon, they left the head at the gates of the city and a small portion of the hoard and disappeared, no one has seen or heard from them since.
